Make It Maple Creek, the Town where Past Is Present.

When people first come to Maple Creek, they invariably comment on how friendly and welcoming its residents are. Its tree-lined streets, heritage buildings, sunny skies and smiling faces encourage people to stay a while. Its strong ranching background translates into a strong community spirit today.

Our population has remained stable in a time when many small towns are losing residents. Our incredible weather – warmer than the rest of Saskatchewan throughout much of the winter – encourages residents and others to retire here. The entrepreneur spirit is strong as well, with several new small service and manufacturing businesses starting up. Interest in establishing new businesses or expanding existing ones is also strong, making our future very bright indeed!

A community-sponsored life lease seniors’ housing complex will be ready for occupancy in June. This complements a new sub-division available for new housing. With respect to existing housing, a strong real estate market means there are homes here that will fit your family, your lifestyle and your budget.

Water quality is a major concern around the world these days and Maple Creek is the place to put those concerns behind you. Not only is our water of wonderful quality from a wonderful refreshing source in the Cypress Hills, but we also boast a state-of-the-art filtration system to ensure safety. Maple Creek is very fortunate to have the quality, taste and safety of bottled water straight out of the tap.

A major source of pride for our community is our new skating rink – a multi-use facility that will ensure the future of sports and recreation for the children (and everyone else!). This project brought the community together with many volunteer hours put into raising funds and building the facility. Sports programs have increased, and now include hockey teams for all age groups from Beginner to Old Timer, as well as a Junior B team, figure skating, broomball and lacrosse. This facility gives us the opportunity to host events such as the Bull Riding Extravaganza and the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering, as well as other community events like graduation, dances, suppers and trade shows.

Maple Creek offers many recreation opportunities, and this means that a large percentage of our population is active, healthy and involved. Besides the new skating rink, we boast a nine-hole grass greens golf course, curling rink, swimming pool, skateboard park, bowling alley and several playgrounds. Interest in cultural activities is strong as well, with two excellent museums offering a wide range of programs, and including an art gallery. For a healthy and active lifestyle, make it Maple Creek!

Maple Creek’s proximity to the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park and Fort Walsh National Historic Site brings many tourists to town, as well as providing local residents a second-to-none chance to have Saskatchewan’s best and busiest holiday destination right in our own back yard. The natural beauty of the area is breathtaking and the history here, both natural and human, ancient and recent, is enough to keep even the most avid buff occupied for a lifetime of repeat visits!

The feeling of optimism in Maple Creek is strong, and is showing itself in many ways. A new Community Development Board is looking at ways to increase tourism and other economic development. A revitalized Chamber of Commerce has a renewed enthusiasm and has increased the focus on businesses working together.

Here in Maple Creek we know that our strong heritage will contribute to a vibrant future. We are working hard to encourage and promote business, recreation, culture and a safe, community-focused, small-town way of life. Maybe that’s why so many people are saying, “Make it Maple Creek!”

Comments from Maxine Manske – Cypress Hills REDA

Upon arriving in Maple Creek in June 2000, I knew at once that this was a place to call home. Friendly, honest and hard-working people create a safe, healthy and vibrant community.

The town's close proximity to the Trans Canada Highway as well as its location on the CPR Mainline encourages and promotes business and economic development. The oil and gas industry continues to grow throughout the region, and further opportunities are available especially in the areas of service and supply. Maple Creek's strong agricultural focus, boasting one of the last privately owned livestock auction markets in western Canada, also contributes to a thriving and diversified economy. Termed as the “gateway to Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park”, Maple Creek has great potential to expand and capitalize on its tourism industry. Interest in Agri-Tourism continues to increase, and three annual rodeos already bring many visitors to the area.

Cypress Hills REDA works collaboratively with Maple Creek Town Council, the Community Development Committee, the Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses to identify, encourage, promote and facilitate the growth and development of our economy.
