Credit Unions of the Southwest Sponsor Action Southwest Project
December 9, 2005
On November 3, 2005 the Action Southwest Business Networks Coalition officially introduced the Action Southwest Sponsorship Fund at their “Determining Our Destiny” regional dinner in Shaunavon. The fund has been established to allow Action Southwest to start taking action on the 30 plus projects the organization identified through roundtable meetings with over 120 of our regions community leaders and industry stakeholders. The details of these projects can be found at www.actionsouthwest.com
“The credit unions of the southwest have been investing in this region’s communities for decades and now once again, they have chosen to invest in our future. There is now a strong emphasis on the need to invest in ourselves and take a strong leadership role in providing funding for economic development. By investing in ourselves we create confidence in our ability to succeed as a region. If economic development is to be sustainable, we need the commitment of our region in addition to the role of government”, says Sandra Blyth, Action Southwest Project Manager.
Glen Goddard of the Cypress Credit Union presented a cheque for $3,000 to the project on December 15, 2005. “We are all in this together and together we can lay the groundwork to make the Southwest a great place to live, work and invest. The credit unions of
the southwest will continue to support this region and we see the Action Southwest project as a great opportunity to do this”, said Goddard, General Manager.
Some of the projects that have been slated for action include the development of a southwest regional map which will highlight the top 100 tourism attractions and experiences offered in the southwest region. In addition, meetings to revitalize the Swift Current airport into a regional airport are also underway which will mean economic benefits for all sectors in the region. The manufacturing sector will be moving ahead with a project that will bring together manufacturers in January 2006 to begin the process of forming a lean manufacturing consortium. The agriculture sector is awaiting funding approval for the establishment of a supply chain network which will compliment new and existing value-added initiatives in the region. Action Southwest is also working in partnership with other organizations, to take the region to “cool school”. This is an initiative that will begin to address the labour attraction and retention issues identified by industry in phase I. It will involve looking at key variables that have been identified as attractive to young professionals and assessing how the region is doing. From this strategies to build on our attractiveness will proceed.
