Revitalizing Hazlet School and Community
January 16, 2006
Hazlet School has launched an initiative to revitalize both school and community. With the support of the Gull Lake School Division, the Hazlet School International Program (HSIP) was unveiled in May 2005. After ten months of thorough research, it was determined that a market existed in the international community for top quality educational programs offering English as a Second Language (ESL) Instruction as well as
standard academic programming.
Parents from non-English speaking countries are very interested in having their children immersed in a setting where they will acquire fluency in English. The basis of the program is that students from foreign countries pay tuition to our school to take part in the programs offered at HSIP. Students are billeted with local families, so they also get the added benefit of learning about our rural Canadian culture. During a recent student recruitment trip to Japan, our programs were met with great enthusiasm. Parents and students were intrigued by our way of life and the uniqueness of our school and community.
In our inaugural term (January –June 2006) we have secured four students to take part in our academic programs. These students hail from Columbia (2), Chile and Germany. We look forward to continuing to build our international reputation and recruit students to fill our quota of twenty students for the 2006-2007 school year.
