Your Region: Background
In
2004, Action Southwest contracted with Doug Elliott, the principal
of QED Information Systems Inc., a Regina-based consulting firm
and the publisher of Sask Trends Monitor to prepare an overview
of the
demographic, social, and economic characteristics of Southwest
residents. That project also include a competitive advantage
analysis for the region.
In
2007, Action Southwest contracted QED Information Systems to
prepare a more extensive database of social, economic, and demographic
information as part of a Southwest Regional Economic Performance
Framework and to update the competitive advantage
analysis. The Know Your Region segment of this website is the
result of that work.
Countries and provinces routinely measure the strengths and
weaknesses of their economies to ensure that they remain competitive.
Doing this kind of work at a regional level is more challenging
because of a relative lack of statistical information.
This
report should be seen as the first step in developing a more
comprehensive system of statistical measures that can be used
to measure the region’s performance.
