A Corridor for Competitiveness:
Expansion of Border Services for Saskatchewan
The
Action Southwest Border Council is embarking on an effort
to assess and build a business case for, and consideration
of expansion of services at one of Saskatchewan 's four ports
of entry within the Southwest region. The focus will initially
include the ports of Willow Creek (Hwy. #21), Port of Climax/Turner
(Hwy. #37), Port of Monchy/Morgan (Hwy. #4), and Port of West
Poplar River/Opheim (Hwy. #2). The focus will then be broadened
to include a comparison of these ports to that of other ports
of entry beyond the Southwest region.
Though
the expansion of border services will profoundly affect the
Southwest economy, the province of Saskatchewan and its U.S.
trading partners will also be positively impacted. As a result,
the project will complete an assessment of current and future
economic conditions within the Southwest region first, and
then expand to include an assessment of Saskatchewan and the
western provinces, and followed by the southern markets of
the United States . In relation to these conditions, an assessment
of existing infrastructure (transportation systems and border
crossings) will also be examined to assist in identifying
necessary areas of improvements assuming current and future
projected economic conditions.
The
results of this study will provide the Southwest and the province
with valuable information that is essential in understanding
current conditions and creating competitive advantage. Understanding
how we compare to other districts and what makes us investment
attractive is information that is imperative for building
a long-term and sustainable growth economy in the Southwest
and Saskatchewan .
Communities and businesses within all regions of the province
and neighboring states will be largely impacted by the Corridor
for Competitiveness project. We invite you to click
on the documents below to learn more about the details of
this initiative and identify how you may be able to assist
in ensuring its success.

"A
story on Page 1 that was part of our May 22 special report about
economic development in the region where Alberta , Saskatchewan
and Montana meet should have said Action Southwest wants a 24-hour
commercial border crossing in southwestern Saskatchewan . The
organization does not favour a particular location."
